    Appointment of Advisor
    • Eligibility: Full-time professors at Graduate School of Korean Studies
    • A co-advisor can be appointed with the primary advisor’s approval (a co-advisor can be an external professor)
    • It is also possible to change an advisor (which requires consent of new and old advisors).
    • When to apply for appointment: Within the 3rd semester after admission
    • How to appoint: At the beginning of each semester (March, September), according to the advisor appointment application announcement, submit the application.
    Qualification Examination for Thesis
    Submission
    • Eligibility: Master’s program (18 credits or more, GPA 2.7 or higher),
      Doctoral program (27 credits or more, GPA 2.7 or higher)
    • Type of examinations: Foreign Language examination (English, Chinese, Korean),
      Major examination (select 2 subjects from the Master’s programs and 3 subjects from the Doctoral programs, selected among the subjects offered by the major)
    • Timing of examination: at least once per semester
    • Passing score: Chinese, Korean, major examination score of 70 (For English and TOPIK passing scores, please refer to the Degree Conferment regulations) or higher, retake of failed subjects
    Thesis Defense
    • Timing: After passing the qualification examination for thesis submission
      and before applying for the examination of the thesis.
    • Mandatory number of defense: For Master’s degree at least once;
      for Doctorate degree at least twice
    • Methodology: Conducted under the guidance of an advisor, and the thesis defense report must be submitted together with the examination request for the thesis.
      • Note: If the thesis topic or advisor is changed after the interim presentation, or if the examination of the thesis is not passed, the interim presentation must be given again.

    Qualifications
    • (1) Appointment of advisor
    • (2) Meeting the requirements for completion

    • (4) Interim presentation completed
    • (5) Completion of thesis research registration for graduates
    Application Period 1st semester (Doctoral program: end of March, Master’s program: end of May),
    2nd semester (Doctoral program: end of September, Master’s program: end of November)
    Examination Opportunity
    • (1) Allowed period: Master’s program - Within 6 years from the year of admission,
      Doctoral program- Within 10 years from the year of admission
    • (2) Submissions: Master’s program - twice, Doctoral program - three times
    Application Extension and Special Cases
    • (1) Extension: Approval possible within 2 years for each subject after deliberation by the Graduate School Committee
    • (2) Special Case: If the application period for thesis examination is exceeded, the opportunity to submit a thesis is granted only once after deliberation by the Graduate School Committee (examination period is 1 year)
    Submission Documents
    • (1) Examination request for the thesis (including recommendation from committee members)
    • (2) Defense report
    • (3) Research ethics pledge
    • (4) Anti-plagiarism system inspection paper
    • (5) Letter of recommendation from an academic authority (applicable persons only)
    Composition of Paper Examiners
    • (1) In principle, former and current university professors are required, and if not, academic authorities are also allowed. (a. Letter of recommendation written by an advisor for the relevant academic authority must be submitted)
    • (2) Master’s degree: 3 (no obligation to participate by outsiders)
      Doctorate: 5 (including at least 1 external member)
    Application Process (1) Fill out an examination request for the thesis and related documents→(2) Recommend papers examiners by advisor→(3) Submit to Division of Academic Affairs→(4) Appoint paper examiners, review by the University Committee→(5) Appoint paper examiners and notify them of their appointment
    Examination Fee
    • Examination Fee for Master’s degree: 50,000 won per external member/
      Doctorate: 200,000 won per external member

    Thesis Examination
    Thesis examination : Examination method, Examination schedule, Result report, score, Conditional pass, Extension of examination period
    Examination Method Consists of thesis examination and oral examination; the examination is performed once for the Master’s program, and two or more times for the Doctoral program.
    Examination Schedule Determined by the committee chair.
    Result Report Submit both Master’s and Doctoral thesis examinations to the Division of Academic Affairs by the end of June for the 1st semester and the end of December for the 2nd semester.
    Passing Score Master’s degree: 2 out of 3 paper examiners scored 80 or higher,
    Doctorate: 4 out of 5 paper examinees scored 80 or higher
    Conditional Pass
    • Pass granted with the two-week revision period to complete all revision requests.
    • After examining the revised thesis, the committee chair must submit a form confirming the completion of all required revisions. If the final report is not submitted, the thesis will not be passed.
    Extension of Examination Period In special circumstances, the final decision of the examination of the Doctoral thesis can be extended once (6 months max) with the approval of the Graduate School Committee.
    Graduation(Conferment of Degrees)
    • Submit printed copies of the thesis: By the end of July for the 1st semester,
      and by the end of January for the 2nd semester
    • Graduation Ceremony: 1st semester in August, 2nd in February
