    Key Features

    • The Graduate School of Korean Studies, the Academy of Korean Studies is a public institution established by the Korean government in 1980 with the goal of developing and educating experts in Korean studies. It offers Master’s and Doctoral degree programs, as well as the AKS Graduate Fellowship program. Generous funding options are available to international students, including full tuition waivers and free Korean language courses. As of September 2021, a total of 250 students, including 120 international students from 30 countries, are enrolled in the Master’s and Doctoral programs.

    Research-focused graduate school specializing in Korean Studies

    • As the world’s only educational and research-oriented graduate school specializing in Korean studies, our school promotes globalization through excellence in Korean studies.

    Focused and Attentive

    • With a low student/faculty ratio of 5, graduate student receive close attention from the faculty members. The programs also offer Independant Study Courses, where each student can tailor their interest and research with a dedicate faculty member. Students can also participate in various research projects as research assistants to enhance their academic capabilities.

    Scholarship

    • All international students are guaranteed tuition waiver for the duration of the course (2 years for a Master’s and 3 years for a Doctorate), and Korean Government Scholarship provides 750,000 won per month to students based on evaluation of their application materials (Possible to be extended after evaluation, 82.5% of the incoming students in September 2021 received government supported stipends).

    Mandatory Korean Language Courses

    • Through the free Korean language courses available for various levels of Korean proficiency, international students can improve their Korean skills required for academic research and communication.

    Dormitory

    • On-campus double occupancy dormitory rooms are available to all international students. Each room comes with a separate toilet and shower, and a communal kitchen and laundry room are available on site. Dormitory-wide wireless internet access is also offered.

    Domestic Field Trip and On-Site Experience

    • Every year, the graduate school conducts field trips to the six different macro-regions in Korea, namely the Yeongdong-Yeongseo cultural zone, Yeongnam cultural zone, Nakdonggang cultural zone, Hoseo cultural zone, and Honam cultural zone. By visiting these six regions in rotation, the fields trips offer the students a comprehensive experience of the various cultures within Korea (currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

    International Field Trips

    • Through annual overseas academic fields trips, students broaden their perspectives and insight on international cultural and academic exchanges.

    Specialized Educational Methods

    • (1) Interdisciplinary courses focused on interdisciplinary exchanges (interdisciplinary subjects)
    • (2) Independent Study Course tailored to the student interests
    • (3) Publication credit transfer. Student publications in peer-reviewed journals can be transferred to graduate course credits.
