    Philosophy major trains experts in philosophy who can study Korean traditional philosophy, through the lens of comparative philosophical perspective and also explore Korea’s future philosophy.

    Educational Goals

    • The educational goal of the Philosophy major is to train creative philosophical thinking ability. Without creative philosophical thinking, our Korean philosophical culture cannot advance and we cannot expect new Korean philosophy for the future. To cultivate philosophical thinking for the creation of Korean philosophy, it is first necessary to study and learn Korean traditional thought. In addition, to properly understand Korean traditional thought, it is essential to understand Western philosophy as well as Chinese and Indian philosophy. Without looking at philosophy comparatively, it is impossible to understand the universality and specificity of Korean traditional ideas centered on Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism. Therefore, the ultimate educational goal of the Philosophy major is to train creative philosophical experts who will pioneer Korean philosophy in the future. However, the more primary goal is to train experts who have the competency to study Korean traditional ideas in depth with comparative insight.

    Educational Focus

    • Study key individuals and their works in the history of Korean philosophy and understand the philosophical significance. Study key individuals and their works in the history of Chinese, Indian, and Western philosophy and understand their significance. Identify domestic and foreign research trends and critically incorporate the research results. Understand the essence of comparative philosophy and philosophical thinking.
