- Anthropology explores the conditions and possibilities of life based on comprehensive understanding of human beings and cultures through systematic fieldwork.
It does an in-depth analysis of historical traditions and cultural changes of Korean society utilizing the cultural relativistic and holistic perspective.
Educational Goals
- The educational goal of the Anthropology major of the Graduate School of Korean Studies is to nurture researchers with the skills to analyze the historical tradition and cultural change of Korean society utilizing the perspectives of cultural relativism and holism. Another goal is to nurture cultural experts who produce practical knowledge making the most of anthropology’s characteristic that emphasizes active participation and intervention in the field. The students need to learn anthropological theory and methodology and to develop cultural sensitivity and communication capability through comprehending a variety of cross-cultural studies on minorities and otherness. Specifically, the students need to develop academic abilities to deal with research topics that include post-colonialism and diaspora, globalization, gender inequality, mass culture and media, urban space, multiculturalism in Korea, etc.
