Call for Papers: 2022 Academic Paper Series

Proposal Submission Deadline: Friday, December 3, 2021

The Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI) is issuing a call for papers for the next round of its Academic Paper Series—a program to generate academic papers and a public discussion of issues related to the Korean Peninsula and affecting the U.S.-Republic of Korea alliance. KEI has commissioned over one hundred papers in this series so far on a variety of topics. To read the individual papers and learn more about the series, please refer to the KEI website (here)

KEI is now seeking proposals for papers to be released in 2022 on original subjects of current interest to serious Korea watchers. Proposal topics should correspond with the interests and expertise of the author, and the description should demonstrate confidence that they would make good additions to this well-rounded series. KEI is interested in papers concerning South Korean politics and economics, South Korea’s international economic and international security relations, and innovative ideas on North Korea. Topics of particular interest this year include, but are not limited to:

    • The arms race on the Korean Peninsula.
    • Prospects for South Korea to become a vaccine production hub.
    • South Korean attitudes towards China and potential effects on the bilateral relationship.
    • South Korea’s approach to climate change.
    • Causes and implications of the rise of anti-feminism in South Korea.

Papers must be written exclusively for KEI, i.e., not have been presented or published previously in any form.

Authors of papers selected by KEI for the KEI Academic Paper Series will receive an honorarium of $1,500 upon completion of the editorial process. KEI will arrange a mutually convenient date for each author to participate in an ON-THE-RECORD public discussion of his/her selected paper. Depending on the guidance of health officials at the time of the program, the author will either present their research at the KEI conference facilities in Washington, DC or remotely via videoconference. KEI strongly prefers the event coincide with the release of the author’s completed paper. Should conditions allow, KEI will provide travel and accommodation expenses for the discussion program.

Papers will need to be approximately 4,000–5,000 words in length. KEI will edit, publish, and distribute finished papers as KEI Academic Papers to government officials, think tank experts, and scholars around the United States and the world. Individual papers will be published online to coincide with the author’s presentation date. KEI will also collate papers to become chapters in Volume 16 of On Korea, which will be published in print in the beginning of 2023.

Interested authors should submit the following information:

    • Full Name
    • Academic/Institutional Affiliation
    • CV Paper
    • Topic Proposal, which includes:
    • A description of the ideas and arguments for the paper
    • A description of the policy relevance or importance of this paper
    • A proposed outline for the paper
    • Earliest/latest date paper can be available

KEI will be accepting proposals until December 3, 2021. KEI will have all decisions made on papers by January 14, 2022. Authors of accepted proposals will be separately notified of the required submission dates.

Please submit your paper proposal to publication@keia.org. For any substantive questions related to the Academic Paper series, please contact Kyle Ferrier, Fellow and Director of Academic Affairs, at kf@keia.org.
